สรุป"Hegel famously held that 'the Orientals knew only that one (i.e. the ruler) is free'. Such stereotyping of Asia as uniformly despotic and enslaved was transmitted to the modern era by thinkers as diverse as Marx and Nietzsche. Just when the new history of Asia appeared to be escaping these Orientalist stereotypes, they have been rediscovered in, of all places, Asia itself. Influential statesman and intellectuals have discerned in 'Asian values' a domain where personal freedom plays a lesser role. The universality of freedom and human rights has again come under critical attack. Asian Freedoms uses the tools of contemporary intellectual history to challenge these trends. Inspired (and goaded) by Orlando Patterson's theory of freedom as a particularly western outgrowth of classical slav-ery, this book argues that authentic conceptions of freedom are found throughout the Asian region, where they have emerged in complex ways from local institutions and practices. A prestigious group of contributors explores these adaptations and aternative genealogies of freedom from historical, religious, political and ideological perspectives. This timely book will make an important contribution to our understanding of Asian politics and culture, parti-cularly in the light of the politically sensitive 'Asian values' debate."
